Origin

New World

Native Range

Central America

Overview

The Curly Hair Tarantula (Tliltocatl albopilosus) is one of the most beloved tarantulas in the hobby thanks to its gentle temperament, distinctive curly setae, and straightforward husbandry. Native to the tropical forests of Central America, this species has become a favorite for both new and experienced keepers alike.

Its curled body hairs give it a unique "fuzzy" appearance unlike almost any other tarantula. Combined with its calm demeanor and willingness to remain visible, the Curly Hair makes an excellent display animal while still exhibiting many of the natural behaviors that make tarantulas fascinating to observe.

GENERAL HUSBANDRY
Temperature

Recommended: 72-80*F (22-27*C)

Normal household temperatures are generally ideal.

Humidity

Curlyhair tarantulas appreciate slightly higher humidity than many desert species, but the enclosure should never remain waterlogged.

Provide:

  • A full water dish

  • Mostly dry substrate

  • One slightly moist corner if desired

Ventilation

Excellent cross-ventilation is essential

An enclosure with good ventilation will help regulate moisture.

Feeding

Slings

  • Small crickets

  • Red runner nymphs

  • Mealworm pieces

Feed every 4–6 days.

Juveniles

  • Small dubia roaches

  • Crickets

  • Red runner roaches

Feed every 7-10 days.

Adults

  • Large crickets

  • Dubia roaches

  • Super worms (on occasion)

Feed approximately every 10-14 days.

Curlyhairs generally have a reliable feeding response, but will sometime refuse food before a molt.

Enclosure Design

Substrate & Decor

As a terrestrial species, Tliltocatl albopilosus benefits from a simple but naturalistic enclosure.

Recommended Setup

  • 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) of substrate

  • Cork bark hide

  • Water dish

  • Leaf litter

  • Moss (optional)

  • Low décor to minimize climbing hazards

Although they occasionally burrow, many adults prefer sitting partially exposed near the entrance of their hide.

Behavioral Observations

Curly Hair Tarantulas are widely regarded as one of the calmest species available. When disturbed, they typically choose to remain motionless or slowly retreat to their hide rather than displaying defensive behavior.

They are frequently visible during the evening and often spend hours resting in the open, making them excellent display animals. While generally docile, individual personalities can vary, and all tarantulas should be treated with respect.
