Brazilian Blue Dwarf Beauty tarantula

Every collection has a story.

Every tarantula collection begins somewhere, and for The Tarantula Journal, that story starts with one of my favorite species—the Brazilian Blue Dwarf Beauty (Dolichothele diamantinensis).

This species has become increasingly popular among tarantula keepers for good reason. Despite its relatively small adult size, it combines beautiful metallic blue coloration, intricate webbing behavior, and an excellent feeding response into one remarkable package.

When I decided to begin documenting my collection on YouTube, I knew this species deserved to be the very first Journal Entry.

Why I Chose the Brazilian Blue Dwarf Beauty

One of the things I love most about this species is that it constantly gives you something to observe.

Unlike many tarantulas that spend long periods hidden away, Brazilian Blue Dwarf Beauties often transform their enclosures into elaborate networks of silk tunnels. Every week the enclosure looks slightly different as new webbing appears and old pathways are expanded.

It's one of those species that rewards patient observation.

Setting Up the Enclosure

For this enclosure, my goal was to provide plenty of opportunities for natural webbing behavior.

The enclosure includes:

  • A cork bark hide

  • Several web attachment points

  • A water dish

  • Natural substrate

  • Good cross ventilation

Rather than creating a deep burrow, this species prefers constructing extensive silk retreats throughout the enclosure, making enclosure design an important part of successful husbandry.

A Living Collection

One of the goals behind The Tarantula Journal is to document the growth of every tarantula in my collection.

Instead of simply creating a care guide and moving on, each species page and Journal Entry will continue to evolve as these animals grow, molt, and change over time.

Years from now, I hope to look back at this very first Journal Entry and see just how far both this spider—and the collection as a whole—have come.

Starting The Tarantula Journal has been something I've wanted to do for a long time. Looking back years from now, I know this first entry won't be perfect—but that's exactly the point. Every collection grows, every creator improves, and every story has to start somewhere. I'm excited to see where this journey leads.
